The Louisiana Fire Marshal’s Office and the National Association of State Fire Marshals have warned consumers about potential hoverboard scooter fire hazards. The self-balancing motorized scooters are expected to be in high-demand this holiday season.
In November 2015, a Lafitte residence was badly damaged by a fire believed to have started when a scooter ignited while being recharged. The purchaser of the scooter described the incident as “like a firework . . . sparks just flying, and before [she] could yell, the house [was] on fire.” Similarly, an Alabama man had his hoverboard scooter for just three days when he recorded it burning and smoking.
In response to these incidents and several others around the country and abroad, the National Association of State Fire Marshals has encouraged prospective consumers to research whether the hoverboard scooters are in compliance with applicable and accepted inspection standards before making their purchases. The scooters run on rechargeable lithium batteries that need to be plugged in to charge.
Fire Marshals have indicated that these batteries and/or cheap imitation chargers are an area of major concern relating to these devices. Thus, buyers should consider purchasing these items from reputable online retailers and local stores that offer warranties, as officials warn that the explosive hoverboards are typically from cheap knockoff companies looking to take advantage of the high-demand during the holiday season.
Prospective buyers should check the packaging for indications of acceptance by recognized testing organizations and Business Insider reports that a hoverboard with a proper battery should cost between $450 to $900 from a reputable shop. Finally, owners should exercise due care when charging the devices by following manufacturer instructions, avoiding improper or imitation chargers, and ensuring that the scooters are not overcharged or left unattended during charging.
